Detailed Tour

Day
1

Meet up in Beceite (Hotel Font del Pas). Briefing.
Beceite - Valderrobres. 6 km

Valderrobres is a municipality and the major town of Matarranya region in the province of Teruel. To gain access into the town you cross the medieval bridge of San Roque, held up by pointed arches, and a Renaissance townhall building.

Its urban layout is composed of narrow, winding streets which creep up the top of the hill in search of the two most emblematic buildings: The Gothic church of Santa Maria and the castle. The name of the town means "Valley of Oaks", referred to the presence of oak (roure in local language).

Day
2

Parrizal Gorge.

15 km.

A short transfer (20 min.) brings us to the starting point. We leave Beceite along the Matarranya River, which squeezes through a narrow valley. Today we are trekking through some of the most rugged landscapes we will see this week. We hike first at the bottom of the gorge and then winding our way up the mountain. We can expect a very pleasant view from the highest points we will reach. Up and down, inside and outside the gorge.

Our way continues through a forest of pine and oak, a track that takes us to Beceite where we stay at the same hotel as the night before, Hotel Font Del Pas. Depending on the weather, we can cool off with a dip in the pool when we reach the hotel.as the night before.

Day
3

Tossal Three Kingdoms - Fredes.

17 km.

A short transfer (20 min.) brings us to the starting point. The first part goes through a dense forest to the Ermita San Miguel and to the summit Tossal Los Tres Reyes (1350 m). Here we literally tower over the 3 ancient kingdoms. Then we take a path that takes us through GR7, the long-distance route that connects the French Vosges with Andalusia in the south of Spain. The red and white stripes lead us through the beautiful natural park of La Tinença de Benifassa and then descending to the hamlet of Fredes.

Day
4

Fredes. El Portel del Infern.

13 km.

One of the best routes offered in La Tinença de Benifassá Natural Park. The first section, runs along the former horseshoe path that links the villages of Fredes and La Senia, through the mythical natural pass El Portell del Infern, among large limestone rock walls.

The itinerary invites us to enjoy the surrounding nature: extensive woods, “Masías”, and river gorges. It is precisely the lack of human influence which has preserved the ecosystems of these lands.

Day
5

Fredes - Boixar - Vallibona.

One of the best routes offered in La Tinença de Benifassá Natural Park. The first section, runs along the former

20 km.

As on the previous day, we walk along the GR7 leaving Fredes, the last of the towns of La Tinença, a territory which was part of the estate of the Abbot of the Monastery of Benifassá. James I the Conqueror recovered these lands before the conquest of Valencia, and in 1233 founded a commemorative hermitage on Mount Beni Hasan.

First get Boixar (means a place round by buxus) and then from here, almost always in descent, we reach Vallibona, another small town of less than 40 inhabitants.

Day
6

Vallibona. Moli de Rico.

12 km.

The Vallibona circle to Rico Water Mill. With two nights in delightful Vallibona, this can be a complete rest day or take the following walk which is by no means strenuous and follows a ravine to a deserted water mill. Another opportunity to see how life once thrived by evidence of the deserted Mas, the Molino and surrounding terraces.

Day
7

Vallibona - Morella. 15 km.

15 km.

That is the final day in this area with its intricate mountain ranges before reaching the spectacular Morella, a town which can be seen for hours in the distance. A town laden with history: Calle Els Porxes, the Town Hall, Iglesia de Santa María Church, Towers and Castle, Renaissance Noble Palaces and a lot more.

Its walls have borne witness to legends such as El Cid, Rodrigo Diaz, who passed through Morella in the year 1084, or the Tiger of El Maestrazgo, Ramón Cabrera, a Carlist General who took up a strong position in the town.

Travelers’ perceptions

Travelers’ perceptions

The Three Kingdoms Trail (wandelreizen Spanje) It is difficult to say what was not good. We have enjoyed the trip (De Drie Koninkrijken wandelreis), especially the nature and the typical Spanish villages. Also the people in the hotels and guesthouses receive us very good with typical and good food. We have had no problems with the descriptions of the way, sometimes we have to look but that is normal and it give a little suspense. I give you a 10/10 for the trip and the warm welcome we have had in Spain and we say tot volgende keer!ˮ

My second hiking trip with Ignacio, and again, a delightful trip in magnificent landscapes! Perfect organisation, beautiful walks, and nice explanations about history, botanics and geography during the hikes. I enjoyed the beautiful landscapes and the silence of the nature on the Three Kingdoms trail!ˮ

Beatrice — België - April 2023

I joined a group of Belgians on my first hiking trip in Spain. The trip itself was labeled "Matarranya" by the reseller where I booked, but is called "the three kingdoms trail" on the website of The Eye is Delighted.

GUIDE: Although I've been on quite a few group hikes, this was the first one with a local guide. Throughout the trip, Ignacio was an endless source of information on geology, nature and the history of the area and its inhabitants. He has a very relaxed way of leading, becoming part of the group, kindly nudging us in the right direction. Knowing the area well, he can improvise, allowing the group to split up either to take a shortcut or a walk a bit extra when it's safe to do so. Arriving in Morella, both in the last evening and the return day, he organized a few extra culinary events at local restaurants and guided us through town in time that otherwise would have been waisted waiting at the airport. Even long after the trip ended, he still interacted with us via the WhatApp groupchat. I will gladly travel with him again on a future trip

AREA: Although it was quite hot for the time of year (reaching up to 35 degrees Celcius), it's not a difficult hike and there's plenty time each day, so you can go slower if needed. Normally I tend to walk quite fast, but here, even on the cooler days, I found myself slowing down to absorb the beautiful landscape and the old and often deserted buildings found in unlikely places (look inside and be surprised!). Go too fast and you miss the gems that are not in plain sight. The mix of nature and historic villages make for great photo opportunities. Apart from locals, we hardly encountered any other people until we reached Morella, which is brimming with activity and you need at least a day to see its highlights.
